How to Make Homemade Coloring Books

Making a coloring book from printable coloring pages found on the Internet is a great craft project for kids, plus they can be used in a variety of ways. It could be for the child’s personal use, given as a gift to a friend or even used as part of a goody bag handed out at a birthday party. Yes, you could make a run to the dollar store and purchase coloring books however allowing your child to select 10-20 coloring pages that they love and sharing them with friends is something they will enjoy doing. Will it take a little more time than buying them? Probably, but going to the store and buying coloring books is not going to be a moment they will remember fondly later in life. Making their own coloring books from scratch and sharing them with friends is something they will never forget. The cost of materials and the time spent making coloring books – priceless.

If you are up for making memories (coloring books) below is a list of materials and equipment you’ll need:

  • File folders – 1 per coloring book
  • Coloring pages – 10 to 20 pages per coloring book
  • Three hole punch
  • Roll of ribbon or yard
  • Paper cutter or scissors

The steps on how to turn coloring pages into coloring books:

  1. Trim the tabs off of the open side, so they are the same size as the coloring pages.
  2. Have your child write or draw something on the front cover. It could be something as simple as “Suzie’s Favorite Coloring Pages”.
  3. Punch holes in each set of coloring pages and the closed side of each file folder.
  4. Insert the coloring pages neatly into the folder.
  5. Bind the coloring pages to the covers by threading a piece of ribbon through each hole and loosely knotting it.

One word of warning – once your kids make their own coloring books from Internet printable coloring pages they’ll want to do it again and again!
